  • An EBV is a number that predicts an animal’s ability to pass specific traits to its offspring. Traits can include milk yield, growth rate, fertility, or disease resistance. EBVs help you select the best animals for breeding and improve your herd over time.

  • PTA is similar to EBV but often used in dairy cattle. It predicts the average performance a bull or cow will transmit to its offspring, particularly for traits like milk production or udder health.

  • Heritability measures how much of a trait is controlled by genetics versus environment. Traits like milk yield are highly heritable, while traits like fertility can be influenced more by management and environment.

  • Genomic testing uses DNA to evaluate an animal’s genetic potential. It improves the accuracy of EBVs and PTAs, giving you a more reliable prediction of offspring performance.

  • Selective breeding is choosing animals with desirable traits to mate. Over generations, this improves your herd’s performance, health, and productivity.

    • Phenotype: What you can see in an animal (e.g., size, coat colour, milk production).

    • Genotype: The animal’s underlying genetic makeup, which may not be immediately visible but influences future traits.

    • Inbreeding: Breeding closely related animals. Can consolidate desirable traits but may increase risk of genetic problems.

    • Outcrossing: Breeding unrelated animals. Increases genetic diversity and can improve herd health.
